Prospect Watch: Starter Wes Benjamin continued his recent strong run with six innings of one-run ball while the Chihuahuas’ offense put six runs on the board early and then held on for the win. Benjamin, 31, got hit hard early in his return to the U.S. after three years in Korea, but he’s given up only five runs over 21.2 innings in his last four starts. The lefty punched out a season-high nine batters without allowing a walk, as Isotopes batters whiffed on a third of their 39 swings. He leaned on his cutter more than he had early in the year, getting four whiffs and nine called strikes with it. … For the second time this year, Bradgley Rodriguez exited the game with an apparent injury. The hard-throwing righty got two quick outs, then issued a walk before immediately summoning the trainer after ball four. He appeared to be experiencing pain in his upper arm. We’ll provide an update as soon as it is available. … Trenton Brooks connected on a pair of homers for the second game in a row, driving in four runs to lead the offense. The San Diego County native and presumptive PCL player of the week, finished the series 10-for-23 with a 1.217 slugging percentage. Brooks, 29, has a 1.032 OPS on the year that ranks second in the league. That’s more than 200 points higher than the mark he had in Triple-A between 2021 and 2024. While he has primarily played first base this year, he made his seventh start in left field on Sunday. … Center fielder Bryce Johnson had a pair of hits and laid down a sacrifice bunt in the contest. In his second stint in the Padres organization, the 29-year-old switch-hitter is reaching base at a .416 clip with a 23.3% strikeout rate.

Key Stats: SS Wyatt Hoffman 2-for-2, BB; C Brandon Valenzuela 0-for-2, 2 BB; RF Moisés Gómez 1-for-2, 2B; RHP Henry Baez 5 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 BB, HBP; RHP Sam Whiting 3 IP, 2 H, 3 K;

Prospect Watch: The Missions outhit Midland 6-5, but hit into three double plays and went just 1-for-8 with men in scoring position as they got shut out to drop the series finale. … Righty Henry Baez came into the game with a 21.2 inning streak going without allowing an earned run. That ended quickly as he issued a walk, hit a batter, and gave up two singles in the first inning to put his team in a three-run hole. After that, he settled in and faced just one batter over the minimum as he worked through five innings. Baez, the Padres’ number six prospect coming into the year, has a 2.47 ERA with a 23% strikeout rate while holding opponents to a .207 average. … Wyatt Hoffman, in the lineup at shortstop, had a pair of hits and drew a walk in three trips to the plate out of the nine hole. The scion of Padres royalty has had back-to-back two-hit contests, matching his hit total from the previous 17 games. … Moisés Gómez had a double in his second at-bat, but after fouling off the first pitch in his third trip to the plate, he exited the game with an apparent injury to his side.

TinCaps 5, Beloit Sky Carp 1

Prospect Watch: Eric Yost and four relievers held Beloit to just one run as the TinCaps claimed the series victory. Yost, one of the Padres system’s biggest breakouts this year, allowed four singles and one run over five innings, striking out five. The 22-year-old, a 17th-round pick out of Northeastern in 2023, has a strong 53:17 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year, helping him post a 2.29 ERA, though he has also surrendered eight unearned runs in 51 innings of work. Yost, whose best offering is his curve, has been working to add velocity to his fastball, which typically sits in the low-90s. … Sean Barnett followed Yost to make his second career appearance on the mound, but struggled with command. The righty who is working to emerge as a two-way player, walked two of the four batters he faced and uncorked a wild pitch, though he did also record his first strikeout. He got a pair of swinging strikes, but missed the zone with 12 of his 22 pitches before his pitch count ended his day. If all goes according to plan, he’ll continue to work in short stints as a reliever several times a week, and bat as the designated hitter three games a week. … Tyson Neighbors finished off the win with a scoreless ninth despite issuing a pair of walks. He hadn’t issued a free pass since April 26, a span of 13 innings. The righty, who has a three-pitch mix as a late-inning reliever, is holding opponents to a .171 average. After one strikeout on Sunday, he has a 43.8% strikeout rate in his first full professional season. … Jack Costello, who was in the lineup at first base, drove in a pair with a single in the second inning, but was cut down trying to extend it to a double. He erased any doubt about extra bases in his next trip to the plate, capping off an 11-pitch at-bat with his fourth homer of the season. Costello, who has also seen time at both corner outfield spots, is hitting .216 on the year. … Kai Roberts had his third multi-hit game of the series and appears to be finding his footing after a rough start with the TinCaps. In three weeks since coming off the IL following hamstring issues this spring, the 24-year-old is hitting .259/.375/.278. After swiping his 10th base in 15 Midwest League games, the speedster was caught for the first time in 30 career attempts in the fourth inning.

Modesto Nuts 6, Storm 5

Key Stats: SS Ryan Jackson 2-for-4, BB, 2B, 3 RBI, SB (13); CF Chase Valentine 2-for-3, BB, 2 SB (5); 1B Victor Figueroa 0-for-2, 2 BB; LHP Luis Gutierrez 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 K, BB; RHP Bernard Jose 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 K; LHP Ruben Salinas (L, 0-2) 1.1 IP, H, ER, HBP

Prospect Watch: The Storm scored the first five runs of the game, but were held in check over the final five frames as the host Nuts scored six unanswered runs to claim the victory. Lefty Luis Gutierrez, coming off the best start of the year in the organization, cruised through the first four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. In the fifth, Modesto strung together three singles and a walk to plate a pair of runs and snap his 13-inning scoreless streak. Gutierrez, 21, hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in his last six outings, striking out 32 against nine walks in 34.2 innings of work during that stretch. His plus changeup has made him especially tough on righties, who are hitting just .172 against him. In his fifth season since signing as one of the key members of the Padres’ 2019 international free agent class, Gutierrez is poised to blow past the 76 innings he worked last year to set a career high. … Lefty Ruben Salinas, who has been seeing action in higher-leverage situations, came on with the score tied and two runners on in the seventh and got a grounder to end the threat. He came back for the eighth and hit a batter with one out. The Nuts then played small ball, stealing a base and advancing the runner to third on a groundout before plating the decisive run on a two-out hit. Salinas, who played in the outfield for Elsinore in 2022 before converting to the mound, has given up runs in all four road games he has appeared in for the Storm, but had two strong outings at home. … Ryan Jackson collected two more hits and a walk as he continues to lead the Lake Elsinore offense. The 23-year-old, who has been seeing everyday duty at shortstop as Cobb Hightower deals with a knee injury, had a double, drove in three, and stole his 13th bag of the year in 14 attempts. He remains just off the league lead with a .458 on-base percentage. … Kavares Tears closed out a nightmare series with a 0-for-5 day at the plate. He went hitless in 22 at-bats with eight strikeouts during the trip to the Central Valley.
